July 14, 2020

Diana Munoz, student of NSRI

Diana Munoz is a junior journalism and mass comunications major at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. This summer she is serving as social media specialist intern for the National Strategic Research Institute. She is certified in Google analytics and Facebook digital marketing. She also continues to work as a technician at the UNO Social Media Lab, which she joined in May 2019.

Why were you drawn to this opportunity with NSRI?

I was interested in the Social Media Specialist internship with NSRI because it would give me an opportunity to apply a lot of what I’ve learned in the UNO Social Media Lab, but also because of the institute’s purpose — pursuing a mission of decisive deterrence and defense is pretty amazing.

What has made the biggest impression on your so far?

What I’ve learned so far is that the researchers of the University of Nebraska have a crazy amount of expertise and experience in national security that I had no idea existed.

It’s also really amazing to see the types of opportunities students have — the other interns this summer are creating a cyber wargame within the nuclear mission area. I’m so excited to see what they come up with.

What have you learned so far?

I’ve learned a lot about NSRI and what it stands for. I’ve learned how to use Buffer to schedule posts on Twitter and LinkedIn. I’ve learned how to make posts fit well with images and how to look at the NSRI google analytics.

Share more about your experience at the UNO Social Media Lab — how has that prepared you for your time at NSRI and ongoing?

While at the UNO Social Media Lab I learned how to look at Google analytics, how to advertise on Facebook and Instagram and how to create newsletters. The lab prepared me for NSRI by getting me involved in different areas of social media which has also made my interests grow.

Do you feel a sense of patriotism in this work?

Yes, being a part of NSRI has helped me better understand the importance of keeping the country safe, and it’s citizens safe. I feel proud to be a part of such a great organization.
