Dr. Teresa Martinez Torres is Deputy Director for Advanced Sequencing at the National Strategic Research Institute at the University of Nebraska, the DOD-designated University Affiliated Research Center sponsored by U.S. Strategic Command.
Before joining NSRI, Dr. Martinez Torres was a Biologist Safety and Security Specialist at Zel Technologies, LLC, where she leveraged her background in microbiology, molecular biology and sequencing technologies.
From 2018 to 2023, Dr. Martinez Torres worked at MRIGlobal as a post-doctoral researcher and staff scientist. During that time, she supported government and commercially-funded research projects utilizing her skills in molecular biology, microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, sequencing and bioinformatics for applications in biosurveillance and biothreat detection.
From 2016 to 2018, Dr. Martinez Torres was part of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University, New York, where she leveraged her bioinformatic background working on computational methods to investigate the mutative properties and the potential effect of DNA editing enzymes in DNA viruses.
Dr. Martinez Torres received her doctorate in Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus. Her research was focused on antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in Gram-Negative nosocomial pathogens. She has presented at numerous conferences and authored several papers. Dr. Martinez Torres received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico.
